The Best Free AI SEO Monitoring Tools in 2026, Plus 10 Prompt Trackers Compared
AI SEO

None of the three free first-party tools in this guide names ChatGPT among the engines it covers.
That's the gap you'd pay a tracker to fill. Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations, Microsoft Clarity builds on the same Bing signals, and Google Search Console reports AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Bing calls its own data "a sample of overall citation activity" (Microsoft Bing, 2026).
Prompt trackers put the same prompts to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others on a schedule. I've compared 10 of them, with every price checked on the vendor's own page on 30 September 2026. For optimisers and graders too, see our four-category guide to AI SEO tools. For the metrics, see how AI visibility tracking works.
What are the two kinds of AI SEO monitoring tools?
AI SEO monitoring tools come in two kinds. A first-party dashboard is the shop's own till roll, with some receipts missing: Microsoft or Google reporting what their engines showed for your site, sampled or as impressions only. A prompt-panel tracker is a mystery shopper that puts the same questions to AI engines on a schedule and records the answers.
Does it matter how a tracker asks?
It does, because some tools read the consumer interface and some call APIs. Perplexity says its API "uses the same search system as the UI with differences in configuration", so outputs "may differ" (Perplexity docs).
How many runs does a tracker need before a number means anything?
Identical prompts keep returning different answers, so one run can't tell you much. SparkToro had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts a combined 2,961 times. It found under a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI, asked 100 times, gives the same brand list in any two responses (SparkToro, 2026). Rand Fishkin ran it with Gumshoe's CTO and flags the conflict of interest himself.
A University of St. Gallen preprint found about 65% of cited sources changed from one day to the next. Its per-brand estimates needed 7 runs to bring the standard error below 0.10 (Schulte et al., 2026). One of its authors is also affiliated with Aurora Intelligence. A second preprint says a citation-share rise from 8% to 11% "cannot be attributed to the intervention with confidence" (Sielinski, 2026). Its author works at the AI-visibility firm IQRush.
Treating one prompt run as your AI visibility score makes as much sense as weighing yourself straight after a fish supper and writing the number on the fridge. SparkToro's own verdict is that visibility share across "dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric".
Ask every vendor how many runs sit behind each number.

1. Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance: Microsoft's own Copilot citation counts
Microsoft's free AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows which of your pages Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cited, how often, and the grounding queries behind them (Bing Webmaster Tools). It covers "Microsoft Copilot", "AI-generated summaries in Bing" and unnamed "partner AI integrations". It refreshes daily and exports to CSV or Excel (Bing Webmaster Tools Help).
Microsoft launched it in public preview on 10 February 2026 (Microsoft Bing, 2026). June added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare (Bing Search Blog, 2026).
What are the report's limits?
Microsoft lists the limits itself: grounding queries "are not full user questions or prompts", citations aren't clicks, and "very low or infrequent citation activity may not surface" (Bing Webmaster Tools Help). Citation Share gives your percentage for a query but doesn't name who holds the rest.
What does it show for a real site?
Our own Bing export shows 44,677 Copilot citations of gogochimp.com in the 90 days to 25 September 2026, in data Bing calls a sample. This page's target query, "best free AI SEO monitoring tools 2026", drew 837 of them at a 26.38% citation share. Drop the word "free" and our share in Bing's sample falls to 11.59%, on 76 citations.
About three citations in four on the first query went to other sites, and the report won't say which. A prompt tracker that covers Copilot is how you'd find out. Our Copilot SEO guide covers how the citations are earned.
In Bing's sampled data, Copilot cited gogochimp.com 837 times in 90 days for "best free AI SEO monitoring tools 2026", a 26.38% share. Bing gives me the share, but it won't name who holds the other 73.62%.
2. Microsoft Clarity Citations: AI citations beside the traffic they send
Microsoft Clarity's Citations report has been free and generally available since 13 May 2026. It reports page citations, share of authority and AI referral traffic. The data combines Bing Webmaster Tools signals with Clarity's own tracking (Microsoft Clarity, 2026). No other free tool here puts citations and AI-referred sessions side by side.
Microsoft doesn't name the AI experiences it covers. Very low volumes may be left out (Microsoft Clarity, 2026). You'll need the Clarity tracking code, possibly domain verification, and one domain chosen at setup that can't yet be changed (Microsoft Clarity, 2026). A separate Topic Insights feature runs weekly prompt simulations of 10 to 15 prompts per topic (Clarity FAQ).
If you already run Clarity for heatmaps, Citations sits in the same account.
3. Google Search Console's generative AI report: impressions only, now worldwide
Search Console's generative AI report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google announced it on 3 June 2026 and says it reached "all websites worldwide" on 31 August 2026 (Google Search Central Blog, 2026). It's free. It counts impressions only, with no clicks, click-through rate or queries.
You can filter by page, country, device and date. Two results from your site in one AI feature count as one impression, and the newest data can be preliminary. A site may not see the report at all if it "hasn't received enough impressions" (Search Console Help).
Our Google AI Mode guide covers what earns those impressions.
4. HubSpot AI Search Grader and HubSpot AEO: a free first look, then $50 a month
HubSpot's free AI Search Grader checks once what GPT-5.4 mini, Perplexity and Gemini say about your brand. You'll have to fill in a form to see the full results (HubSpot AI Search Grader). HubSpot calls it "a single moment in time". Its ChatGPT and Gemini answers "pull from training data" (HubSpot AEO).
HubSpot AEO, its Beta tracker, runs 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini for $50 a month, or $45 paid yearly. The trial's free for 25 prompts with no card. Each extra brand is another $50 instance (HubSpot AEO).
5. SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit: 5 free checks a day, then £95 a month
SE Ranking tracks brand mentions and links across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It says it reads responses "as a real user would see them" (SE Ranking). Its free checker allows 5 checks a day. There's also a 14-day trial with no card.
To a UK visitor, Core cost £95 a month, or £76 a month billed annually, for 100 prompts tracked daily across 5 LLMs (SE Ranking pricing). SE Ranking also says "There's no benchmark yet as AI search is too new for the industry" (SE Ranking).
That's a caveat for every tool here.
6. AthenaHQ: 300 free credits to test before you pay
AthenaHQ charges in credits, where "1 credit = 1 AI response". Its free Essential plan includes a "$25 free credit" and 300 credits across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. Starter costs $295 a month, or $245 billed annually, for 3,600 credits and "Visibility across 11 models", Claude and AI Mode among them (AthenaHQ plans).
The plans page and the prompts guide don't say whether the free credit renews or how often prompts run. Ask before you rely on it.
7. Otterly.AI: 15 daily prompts on four engines for $29 a month
Otterly.AI's Lite plan costs $29 a month, or $25 billed annually, excluding tax. That buys 15 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. AI Mode and Gemini are $9-a-month add-ons. Claude is $29 (Otterly.AI pricing).
Otterly queries "as a neutral, non-personalized user" so browsing history doesn't skew results (Otterly.AI help). That keeps runs comparable from day to day.
Otterly's pages don't say whether it reads interfaces or APIs, or how long its trial lasts.
8. Rankscale: pay per check, scheduled hourly to monthly
Rankscale sells credits: 0.25 per engine per prompt on AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, 1 on DeepSeek and 2 on Claude. Plans start with Essentials from $17 a month, billed yearly ($204 a year). Pro is $99 a month for 1,200 credits, "up to 4,800 answers", with a 7-day trial (Rankscale pricing).
Prompts run "hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly". Rankscale labels Copilot and AI Overviews "GUI engines", read from the interface, and others "API engines" (Rankscale pricing).
Given Perplexity's note that the two can differ, check which engines fall in which group.
9. Ahrefs Brand Radar: a 448-million-prompt index plus your own prompts
Ahrefs Brand Radar's AI Visibility Index covers 448 million pre-run prompts, from $199 a month or $699 for all models. Its Custom Prompts check your own questions daily, from $50 a month, and add Claude at 8 checks per update. A free preview shows your AI visibility before you pay (Ahrefs Brand Radar). They're USD prices, and the UK pricing page showed Brand Radar from £159 a month.
The index covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Custom packages are sold in checks, where one prompt on one platform in one location is one check. Ahrefs Lite (£99 a month) includes 5 tracked prompts (Ahrefs pricing).
Ahrefs says the index is "re-tested monthly on a 90-day reporting window" and "may have limited coverage for brands with little or no search volume" (Ahrefs Brand Radar).
10. Peec AI: daily interface tracking from €85 a month
Peec AI's Starter plan costs €85 a month for 50 prompts on 3 models of your choice, with daily tracking and unlimited users. You choose from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI. An extra model such as Perplexity is €25 a month on Starter (Peec AI pricing).
Peec reads the consumer interface, where for most platforms "the platform decides which model to use and whether it runs a web search" (Peec AI docs). It tracks daily because answers "naturally vary day to day". There's a free trial, though its length isn't stated.
11. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: $99 a month, with no free trial
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month according to its knowledge base. There's no free trial (Semrush KB). To a UK visitor, the pricing page showed £80.22 a month per domain. That covers 25 custom prompts tracked daily and mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity (Semrush pricing).
Its reports draw on "over 317 million prompts and responses", which Semrush says come from real requests rather than LLM APIs. It's candid about the ceiling: "no platform can provide exact numbers on visibility" (Semrush KB).
12. Scrunch: $250 a month per brand, with site audits included
Scrunch Core costs $250 a month per brand for 125 prompts, 5,000 responses a month and 5 site audits. It covers 4 engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot (Scrunch pricing). Enterprise adds Claude, Gemini, Meta AI, AI Mode and Grok. There's a 7-day trial on Core.
Scrunch collects answers through "browser automation and official platform APIs" (Scrunch FAQ). New prompts run daily for 14 days, then every 72 hours by default. You can refresh any prompt on demand (Scrunch pricing).
13. Profound: a free 7-day trial, then enterprise pricing
Profound's pricing page lists two plans for brands: a free trial and custom-priced Enterprise. The trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Enterprise tracks up to 9 answer engines, including Claude, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek and Exa Search (Profound pricing).
Trial users "cannot customize their prompts". On the Agency Growth plan, each full client workspace is a $399-a-month add-on with 100 prompts tracked daily. The plan's base price isn't shown (Profound pricing).
Where does an auditor like Rubric fit?
A tracker tells you where you're cited. An auditor tells you what to change on your own pages, and that's the job we built Rubric for at GoGoChimp. Rubric predicts citability, it doesn't count citations. It scores on-page signals, so it sits beside a tracker rather than replacing one. Across the 244 sites in our 2026 citability benchmark, the median scored 66.
It crawls your site and ranks fixes in an action plan, with checks such as crawler reachability and quotable passages. You read results in the web report, or connect Claude through Rubric's hosted MCP.
A free account audits up to 500 pages and keeps 5 sites in your portfolio. On 5 October 2026, Rubric's pricing page showed Pro for $99 a year at the founding price for the first 100 accounts, locked in for as long as you keep Pro (the standard price is $149).
Why measure the page, not the AI's mood?
A tracker measures the AI's answers, and as the studies above show, those change from one run to the next. An audit measures your page, which only changes when you change it. That makes the audit the steadier number to work against from week to week.
Rubric doesn't ask a model for its opinion, so there's no sampling noise. The same page scored twice under the same rules gets the same score. When we re-crawled 42 agency sites a day apart in October 2026, the median site moved 0 points (Rubric's published method). The trade-off is that an audit can't tell you whether an engine actually cited you. For that you still need a tracker or the engines' own reports.
To see where your own pages stand, run a Rubric audit. It's free and needs no sign-up.
How should you choose an AI SEO monitoring tool?
Switch on the three free first-party tools before you pay anyone a penny. They're the only ones here reporting the engine owners' own data about your site. Add one prompt tracker if the budget allows, picked for the engines your buyers use.
Then use an auditor to decide what to change.
Our AI SEO measurement stack turns the three kinds of tool into one monthly report. The AI SEO hub links the rest of the cluster.
Which tracker suits a small budget?
Otterly.AI Lite at $29 a month or HubSpot AEO at $50 covers a starter prompt set on three or four engines. Before paying, try HubSpot's free Grader, SE Ranking's 5 daily checks or AthenaHQ's free credits. If you're already paying for Ahrefs or Semrush, price their AI add-ons first.
Which tracker suits an agency with several brands?
Check the per-brand charge. Scrunch and HubSpot AEO bill each brand separately, and Profound charges $399 a month per client workspace. Peec AI's Pro plan covers 2 projects and Advanced covers 5 (Peec AI pricing).
What should you check before you pay for a tracker?
Check whether the refresh schedule keeps up with your engines. Across more than 43,000 keywords, Ahrefs found 45.5% of citations change when an AI Overview updates. An AI Overview persists 2.15 days on average (Ahrefs, 2025). Ahrefs sells Brand Radar and drew the data from it.
Check what "Google AI" means on the plan, too. Ahrefs found only 13.7% of citations overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode (Ahrefs, 2025), so covering one doesn't cover the other.
Questions about AI SEO monitoring tools
What is the best free AI SEO monitoring tool?
Start with Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, which shows Microsoft's sampled record of Copilot citations by page and grounding query. Add Search Console's generative AI report for Google's AI impressions, and Microsoft Clarity to see AI-referred traffic beside your citations.
Can Google Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?
The generative AI report can't: it counts impressions only, and Google documents no clicks, click-through rate or query dimension for it. AI feature traffic does sit inside the main Search report's "Web" search type, mixed in with everything else (Google Search Central).
How accurate are AI visibility trackers?
They're accurate about the answers they saw, but each run is one sample of an answer that changes. Share of appearance across many prompts and repeated runs holds up better than rank position, and small movements can sit inside the noise.
Do AI visibility trackers see personalised ChatGPT answers?
A tracker querying from a clean profile can't. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use saved memories when rewriting a search query, and an approximate location based on your IP address (OpenAI Help Center). Otterly.AI and Peec AI both describe querying as a neutral or logged-out user. For the sources ChatGPT picks, see what ChatGPT actually cites.
Which trackers include Claude, and at what cost?
Otterly.AI sells Claude as a $29-a-month add-on to Lite, and Rankscale charges 2 credits per Claude check. Ahrefs includes Claude in Custom Prompts, but it isn't in the index. AthenaHQ Starter lists Claude, and Profound, Scrunch and Peec AI offer it on Enterprise plans. Our Claude and Gemini SEO guide covers the engine itself.
Why do tracker numbers swing from month to month?
Sampling noise is one reason, and the engines changing behaviour is another. seoClarity saw ChatGPT's US zero-citation rate double from 28% to 48% in March 2026, before citations rebounded toward pre-March levels in May (seoClarity, 2026). A fall in your tracker can come from the engine rather than your pages.
