Profound Alternatives: Do You Need an AI Visibility Tracker or an Auditor First?

If you searched "Profound alternatives", there's a good chance you hit the pricing page and found a demo button where you expected a price. On 20 October 2026, Profound's public pricing page listed two plans for brands: a free Trial and a custom-priced Enterprise plan behind "Get a Demo". That is a sensible model for large teams. It is a hard first step for a consultant, an in-house marketer or a site owner who wants to know where they stand this week.

What does Profound cost in October 2026?

Profound's public pricing page, checked on 20 October 2026, shows a free Trial and a custom-priced Enterprise plan. The Trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on three engines (ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews). It covers one language and one region, with no exports or API. Enterprise is quoted after a demo.

According to the same page, Enterprise covers up to nine answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Exa Search. It adds daily prompt tracking, all-time history, CSV and JSON exports, API access and SSO. Its agency tab lists a self-serve Agency Growth plan with no base price shown. Each full client workspace is a $399-a-month add-on with 100 prompts tracked daily and 400 Agent credits a month.

Older comparison articles still quote fixed monthly Profound tiers. Treat any price you didn't read on Profound's own page this week as out of date, and check the page yourself before you budget. Pricing pages change.

Tracker or auditor: what's the difference?

A tracker measures outcomes in a sample of AI answers. An auditor measures the pages those answers would have to quote. They sit at opposite ends of the same chain, so one can't stand in for the other.

AI visibility tracker (for example Profound) Citability auditor (Rubric)
Question it answers Did my brand appear or get cited for these prompts? Could an engine attribute, lift and trust a passage from this page?
How it works Runs a library of prompts on AI engines on a schedule and records mentions and citations Crawls your site and scores each page against 44 checks across three pillars: Known, Findable and Trusted
What changes the result The engines, the prompt list, the run, the day What's on your pages: markup, structure, sources, authorship, crawler access
Good at Share of voice against competitors, trend lines, reporting to a board Finding why a page can't be quoted, and which fix to make first
Can't tell you Why a page was skipped Whether you have already been cited (it estimates citability and doesn't count citations)
Cost to start (20 Oct 2026) Profound: free 7-day trial, then custom Enterprise pricing Free audit, no sign-up, 25-page preview, and a free account up to 500 pages

The "what changes the result" row matters most. AI answers vary between runs, so a tracker's number moves even when your site hasn't changed. That is why trackers sample many prompts many times. An auditor scores what's on the page, which is the part you control and can fix this afternoon.

What can't a tracker see on your pages?

A tracker can show that a competitor was cited and you weren't. It can't show that your best page has no named author, opens with three paragraphs of preamble, or loads its schema with JavaScript that some AI crawlers don't run. Those are page problems, and they are common.

In Rubric's benchmark re-crawl of 7 October 2026 (244 sites scored, up to 40 pages each), these were the most common failures. A site counts when a check failed on more than half of its applicable pages:

Page problem Sites failing
No named author 198 of 242 (82%)
No answer-first opener 197 of 242 (81%)
Headings that aren't questions or claims 181 of 242 (75%)
No content-type schema 171 of 243 (70%)
Fewer than two external source links 138 of 244 (57%)

The median site scored 66, 77% scored below 70, and none reached 90. Trusted was the weakest pillar, with a median of 49.

Schema loaded by JavaScript is the one that catches people out. In Vercel's December 2024 analysis, the crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity didn't render JavaScript, so schema injected by a script was invisible to them. Our guide shows how to find JavaScript-injected schema. A tracker would only show you the symptom (fewer citations from those engines) without the cause. Rubric scores render parity as one of its 44 checks.

If you start tracking prompts before fixing these, you pay to watch a number you have no lever on yet.

Are there free first-party alternatives?

Yes, three, and all of them are worth setting up before you pay anyone.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report. Microsoft opened it as a public preview in February 2026 to any verified site. It shows citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, the pages cited, and grounding queries (the phrases the AI used to retrieve your content). Search Engine Land noted that it shows no clicks, and exports are CSV only. Bing labels the data a sample of overall activity. Our Microsoft Copilot SEO guide covers how to read it.

Microsoft Clarity's Citations report. Generally available since 13 May 2026, it shows the same Copilot and partner citations inside Clarity, next to your session data.

Google Search Console. Its generative AI report, open to all sites since 31 August 2026, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode but no clicks. Clicks from those features sit in the standard Performance report, within the Web search type. On 15 October 2026, Google added more links inside AI Mode and AI Overview answers. Asked about click data, it said it "will introduce additional metrics over time". So Google gives you more link slots and still no way to see the clicks those slots send you separately.

None of these covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini answers. No AI engine has shipped a webmaster dashboard for those yet, which is the gap paid trackers fill by running their own prompts.

Which Profound alternative fits which job?

Match the tool to the question you will act on this month.

Your job this month Start with Why
Report AI share of voice across many engines to a board or client A paid tracker (Profound Enterprise or another multi-engine tracker) Trackers sample prompts at scale and give trend lines
See your real Copilot citations, free Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance First-party data, with no clicks shown
Find out why your pages aren't being quoted A citability audit (Rubric) Scores the pages against 44 checks and ranks the fixes
Spot-check one high-value question Ask the engines yourself, in a fresh session with no chat history Free, but one answer is a single sample

What does Rubric cost, and what can't it do?

Rubric has a published price. The free audit needs no sign-up and previews 25 pages in about a minute. A free account audits up to 500 pages, with exports. Rubric Pro is $149 a year, or $99 a year at the founding rate for the first 100 accounts, locked for life. It adds up to 25,000 pages per audit, white-label reports, unbranded exports and priority crawls, with a 30-day no-questions refund.

Rubric's limits, so you can compare like for like:

  • Rubric estimates citability from on-page, structural and technical signals. It doesn't count citations you've already earned, and it doesn't show AI clicks.
  • The score is a page measurement, so a fix moves the score. It doesn't guarantee a citation or a ranking, because the engines decide that.
  • It weights six engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude). Grok is advisory and unscored.

Audit and fix the pages first, set up Bing's free report, and buy a tracker when you need trend lines across engines that no first-party tool covers.

How to choose in 15 minutes

  1. Run a free audit on your own site (about a minute). Note the score and the top fix. Below 70 means page work comes before tracking.
  2. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance report. Note which pages Copilot already cites.
  3. List the 10 questions a buyer asks before choosing you. Put each one to two engines, in a fresh session. If you're missing, compare your page against whoever was cited.
  4. Only then price a tracker. You'll know which engines and prompts you need, which is what a demo call will ask you anyway.

Questions about Profound alternatives

Is Profound free?

Profound offers a free Trial: 50 prompts tracked daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, in one language and one region. Its Enterprise plan is custom-priced after a demo. This is what the public pricing page showed on 20 October 2026.

What is the cheapest way to check AI visibility?

Combine two free tools. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows real Copilot citations for a verified site. A free Rubric audit scores whether your pages can be quoted by six engines, with no sign-up. Neither shows AI clicks, and no engine reports those to site owners separately yet.

Does an AI visibility tracker tell you why you weren't cited?

No. A tracker records whether you appeared in a sample of AI answers. It doesn't read your pages, so it can't tell you that a page lacks a named author, buries its answer, or hides its schema behind JavaScript. An auditor checks those page-level causes.

Can Rubric replace a tracker?

Not fully. Rubric scores whether your pages can be cited. It doesn't monitor which prompts you appear in or compare your share of voice against competitors over time. Teams that report AI share of voice can run both: an auditor to fix pages, a tracker to watch outcomes.

Run a free audit on your own site to see which pages an AI engine could quote today.
